Blounts Creek Retreat

This page is intended to share thoughts about permaculture design for the house I own in Fayetteville, NC, which offers visitor accommodation through Airbnb under the moniker, Blounts Creek Retreat.

I’m reinvigorating a Centipede Grass lawn.

The dark areas are where seed I introduced on Tuesday was watered today. It must be kept damp for three weeks to begin to establish itself. Will be worthwhile if this works – it is great grass to have, drought resistant, mildly aggressive in its spreading, and very low maintenance.

And I’m rethinking storm water management. I dug up a corner of my yard, and here is what I found.

I found the storm water plumbing that was installed when this house was built in 1980 which I think discharges into the creek behind the house.

The drain on the left was under 4 inches of soil, and the outlet was blocked by roots and soil in the pipe. The pipe in the center is a french drain – curious to see how much it collects next time it rains heavily. It used to join the pipe on the right coming from a drain by my driveway with the Y junction shown.

Wondering about the feasibility of replacing all of this with a rain garden or two. Want to discharge storm water into the ground, not to the creek.
